Thoughtful Thursday: Favorite Series Type

Thoughtful Thursday

It is time for Thoughtful Thursday and the bookish questions that pop up while I am reading. Please share your thoughts on the bookish question of the week. I am curious to hear what you have to say! There are no wrong answers. Questions about Thoughtful Thursday or future Thoughtful Thursday posts? Check out my Thoughtful Thursday section. Alright, on to the question!

There are lots of different types of series. For example, there are series that are just one long story (e.g., The Lord of the Rings), there are series that follow a character on a set of different adventures (e.g., The Dresden Files and The Sookie Stackhouse novels), and there are series that are a collection of stand alone novels all within the same universe (e.g., Star Wars Universe). What is your favorite type of series?

Part of the reason that I started Thoughtful Thursday is that I read an article by Jo Walton about series types. I found this article to be super fascinating. I never thought about different types of series. Once I started thinking about it though, it was so obvious that there are a few different types of series.

After careful thinking, I think that my favorite type of series is one that follows a character on a variety of adventures like The Sookie Stackhouse novels. Trilogies are cool, but I prefer if the mystery is solved in one book. It is okay if there are some unanswered questions at the end of a book, but I prefer most stuff to be solved. I love a long and epic tale as much as the next person (I am loving The Stormlight Archive like crazy); however, I hate waiting for story resolution. I want it all and I want it now. I love being able to have resolution at the end of a book and feeling like I have the choice to read the next book or not. I find that a lot of trilogies put you in a situation that you are obligated to read the next book or your last image of your favorite protagonist is in the middle of some awful cliffhanger.

I do enjoy books that are all set in the same universe; however, I don't love them. This is because I usually fall in love with one or two characters, and I only want to follow those particular characters. I only end up reading a few books within the series, because I am not willing to experience other characters. Yep, I am stubborn and ridiculous.

Now it is your turn! What is your favorite type of series?
