Thoughtful Thursday: Character Crushes & BFFs

It is time for Thoughtful Thursday and the bookish questions that pop up while I am reading. Please share your thoughts on the bookish question of the week. I am curious to hear what you have to say! There are no wrong answers. Questions about Thoughtful Thursday or future Thoughtful Thursday posts? Check out my Thoughtful Thursday section. Alright, on to the question!

Do you have character crushes? Are there characters that you want to be your BFF?

Back when I was in middle/high school and college, I crushed on book characters all of the time. I remember when I was younger I would reread all of the sections of the Little House books by Laura Ingalls Wilder that had scenes with Laura and Almanzo in them. I think I have reread These Happy Golden Years more times than the rest of the series combined. I thought Almanzo was just so lovely, and I wanted to be courted by him or someone just like him. As I am writing this, I have to laugh that my introduction to romance is through the very tame Little House books. When I was in college, I distinctly remember having a crush on Ron Weasley. I thought he was brave and funny and great. I think it was in college that I discovered Checkmated, which was a website that was primarily devoted to Ron and Hermione fanfiction. I recently discovered the site is now defunct. I was so sad to see this, because I lived vicariously through Hermione.

Nowadays, I don't find myself crushing on characters too much. There will be lines that characters will say that will make me melt a bit (or a lot) inside, but I don't find myself crushing as hard as I did on Almanzo and Ron. I think part of the reason is that I keep reading books with 20-something (or younger) main characters in them, and I don't feel comfortable crushing on them, because I am in my 30s. I realize that this isn't a huge age gap, but it feels like a big age gap to me. I think it is because I have supervised a lot of college students as a graduate student, so I have separated them into a different age bracket from me in my mind.

In regards to character BFFs, I have tons of those. I would be so happy to know or be best buds with so many characters. Off the top of my head, I would love to know Hermione Granger, Luna Lovegood, Georgia and Shawn Mason, Sookie Stackhouse, Arya Stark, and Sansa Stark, just to name a few. Some book characters appear to be similar to me, and I think we would just hit it off as best friends (e.g., Hermione Granger). There are other characters who have led such interesting lives that I would love to have the opportunity to speak with them in depth and get to know them better.

Now it is your turn! Do you have character crushes? Are there characters that you want to be your BFF?
