Thoughtful Thursday: Favorite Genre

Thoughtful Thursday

It is time for Thoughtful Thursday and the bookish questions that pop up while I am reading. Please share your thoughts on the bookish question of the week. I am curious to hear what you have to say! There are no wrong answers. Questions about Thoughtful Thursday or future Thoughtful Thursday posts? Check out my Thoughtful Thursday section. Alright, on to the question!

What is your book of choice? Romance? Horror? Thriller? Mystery? Coming-of-age? Feel free to get as specific or as broad as possible.

Oh geez. Why did I even ask this question? Favorite genre? Favorite type of book? This is a hard question! At the same time, this is a pretty timely question (yea for coming up with it a month or so ago) considering all of the smack talk that has been going down about YA, SF&F, and mysteries (amongst others) recently. I am happy to see so many people give lots of love to their favorite genres.

As you probably guessed, I am a huge science fiction and fantasy fan (with a preference for fantasy over science fiction). I can't tell you how I got into the genre. I can't remember a time in my life that I wasn't reading SF&F. Some of my earliest memories are of my mom reading Puss-in-Boots or Just So Stories to me over and over again. I think my mom threw out my copy of Puss-in-Boots, because she was tired of reading it. Growing up I read my fair share of The Baby-sitters Club and Nancy Drew books, but I was (and still am) a fan of dragons, castles, royalty, and enchanted forests.

Thinking back to why I connected with this genre, I think it was because fantasy stories felt so different from my day-to-day life. I read to escape when I was younger, and an enchanted forest wase about as different from my sixth grade life as possible. My life wasn't bad by any means, but I remember not feeling like I belonged. I loved inserting myself into these fantastical realms and making myself an important character. If I couldn't feel like I was the protagonist of my life in my real life, I could be the protagonist of my imaginary life. As you can probably imagine, life got immensely better when I started college and met more people who enjoyed the same hobbies as I did.

I do read non-SF&F books nowadays, but I have noticed that most of them tend to have SF&F elements. For example, many of the nonfiction books I read are science-themed (e.g., March Roach's books). I guess it is hard to walk away from your first love. SF&F was my safety blanket when I was little, and I don't want anything else anymore.

Now it is your turn! What is your book of choice?
