Welcome
to Top Ten Tuesday! I recently discovered that I could to the prompts
well in advance of Tuesday, so doing TTT suddenly became much more
possible. :) Sometimes I am a bit slow on the uptake. So, without any
further ado...
Top Ten Tuesday
is a weekly meme created by The Broke and the Bookish. Each week bloggers post a top ten list related to a specific theme. This week's theme is Top Ten Scariest Looking Book Covers. Interestingly, I have only read 5 of these books.
1. Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark Treasury by Alvin Schwartz (and illustrated by Stephen Gammell)
The book cover and the illustrations are quite scary. I used to have to cover them up when I was reading the stories.
2. The Ocean at the End of the Lane by Neil Gaiman
This
cover freaks me out, because it looks like the girl is drowning. She
may be okay, but my first thought that she is in trouble and I can't do
anything to help her.
3. Tales from Lovecraft Middle School series by Charles Gilman
All of the covers from this series are a bit freaky, but the Substitute Creature cover in particular scares me just a bit.
4. It by Stephen King
Clowns don't normally scare me; however, this clown is so sinister. I am afraid he is going to jump off the page!
5. Death Troopers by Joe Schreiber
Good
things are not going to happen in this book when you have a Storm
Troopers helment (and head) hanging from a hook on the book cover.
6. Flowers in the Attic by VC Andrews
This cover just looks so haunting.
7. The Killing Joke by Alan Moore and Brian Bolland
If you are this close to the Joker, bad things are going to happen. Really bad things.
8. Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children by Ransom Riggs
Black and white pictures of lonely children are scary. She looks like she is going to jump off the cover and haunt me.
9. The Haunting of Hill House by Shirley Jackson
This house looks like it is haunted. Opening the book is like entering this house, bad things are going to happen.
10. I Am Legend by Richard Matheson
The perspective of this cover looks like the vampires are getting in line to jump off the cover.

The It cover you found is so much scarier than the cover I used! That clown! *shudders*
Yes - IT definitely takes the cake here.
I have never heard of Substitute Creature before but I am really freaked out by it!
Thanks for stopping by my TTT!
#2 freaked me out, and the Clown from It will forever make me shiver. Awesome covers :)
OH I remember reading those anthologies of the Scary Stories when I was in middle school, they'd always have them at the book fairs. Loved them!
I loved Flowers in the Attic too, definitely haunting. I think the scariest of those covers for me is Substitute Creature, I mean OMG can you imagine getting THAT as a substitute teacher?! That creepy ass smile with those dead eyes AHHHHHH!
Great list! :D
I went looking for this one specifically, because I remember seeing it when I was younger and it scaring me!
Clowns are just plain scary! Why are they continued to be marketed as loveable?
The entire Lovecraft Middle School book series has some pretty scary covers. The hardback cover shift from monster to human. I am sure that age demographic for this series loves the scary covers!
The Ocean at the End of the Lane is a pretty cover but still a bit scary!
Thanks! I knew I wanted to add one of those Lovecraft Middle School books, and when I saw the Substitute Creature one, I knew I had a winner! :)
Ugh, The Killing Joke *shiver*. I agree, if you're that close to the Joker, bad things are bound to happen.
Roxy @ Story Envy
Of all the Batman villains, the one I wouldn't want to be captured by is the Joker. He is definitely the one most likely to do something bad to you!
Wow these are some scary covers! I would have nightmares for weeks...
Nice list this week, I didn't get round to the TTT this week.
Chanzie @ Mean Who You Are.
Substitute Creature is like my worst nightmare come to life. And the Death Troopers cover is gross. Cool picks.
I must admit that I kept thinking about these covers as I was trying to fall asleep. Sleep, as you can imagine, did not go well.
Thanks! Death Troopers gave me a fright the first time I saw it when it was making the SF&F blog rounds when it first came out!
Ooh, I love The Haunting of Hill House cover! It looks quite creepy while still making me want to read it. I feel like with scary covers, a lot of times less is more, and that one works well. And I find Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children cover quite creepy too.
I completely agree! I prefer books to have subtle book covers that let my imagination do the work. :)
I probably shouldn't have read this post just before going to bed LOL - those are some creepy covers! The Substitute Creature covers freaks me out the most!
Oh no! I hope you are able to fall asleep tonight! The Substitute Creature cover is definitely getting the most votes. What scares me about that is that Substitute Creature is supposed to be for kids! :)
