Top Ten Tuesday: Top Ten Books I Read In 2013

Welcome to Top Ten Tuesday! Top Ten Tuesday is a weekly meme created by The Broke and the Bookish. Each week bloggers post a top ten list related to a specific theme. This week's theme is Top Ten Books I Read In 2013. These books are all SF&F. I did a non-genre list of the top ten books I read in 2013 previously. All links lead to GoodReads.

The Darkest Minds by Alexandra Bracken

1. The Darkest Minds by Alexandra Bracken
This is a great post-apocalyptic/dystopian YA story about kids with psychic abilities.

His Majesty's Dragon by Naomi Novik

2. His Majesty's Dragon by Naomi Novik
There are talking dragons that fight in the Napoleonic Wars! The later books are fun, but none are as good as the first book in this series.

Doomsday Book by Connie Willis

3. Doomsday Book by Connie Willis
Oxford student Kivrin decides to go back in time to study how people celebrated Christmas in the Middle Ages. Things go horribly wrong.

Among Others by Jo Walton

4. Among Others by Jo Walton
One can argue that this book is not a fantasy story. In any matter, the protagonist is a teenager girl who reads a lot of SF&F books that she gets from interlibrary loan.

Feed by Mira Grant

5. Feed by Mira Grant
Zombies done right.

The Lies of Locke Lamora by Scott Lynch

6. The Lies of Locke Lamora by Scott Lynch
Although I enjoyed all three of the Gentleman Bastards series, I loved the first book the most.

The Curse of Chalion by Lois Bujold Masters

7. The Curse of Chalion by Lois Bujold Masters
This is a great political intrigue story set in a fantasy realm. This story is far less confusing than A Game of Thrones.

A Natural History of Dragons: A Memoir by Lady Trent by Marie Brennan

8. A Natural History of Dragons: A Memoir by Lady Trent by Marie Brennan
This is a great memoir of a woman who studies dragons.

Ready Player One by Ernest Cline

9. Ready Player One by Ernest Cline
A great book for a child of the 80s who loves video games and SF&F.

Leviathan Wakes by James SA Corey

10. Leviathan Wakes by James SA Corey
This is space opera at its best.

READY PLAYER ONE! You know, that might be one of the rare books that I go back and reread. Will Wheaton reads the audiobook, so I'm thinking of giving that a whirl. And your single sentence about The Darkest Mind has me intrigued....

I love Ready Player One sooo much!

I LOVED Ready Player One. I want to reread it in 2014.
I ordered The Lies of Locke Lamora recently and am currently waiting for it to get in the mail. Very excited about that one,
I bet The Darkest Minds made a lot of lists which makes me want to get it even more. But I wanted to wait until next year when the last book comes out.

I haven't read any of the books on your list - but I have The Lies of Locke Lamora on my TBR, as I have read the third book in the series, and I really loved it. If the first book is the best, I'm in for a real treat.

Happy New Year Pamela :)

The Darkest Minds also made it to my list. I am not quite familiar with the other books but I hope to check them out :) Happy New Year, Pam! :D

The Lies of Locke Lamora is on my kindle, waiting to be read. I've seen His Majesty's Dragon before, I might have to give it a shot!

Great list!

I really want to read The Darkest Minds but I dislike the Australian cover so I need to get it online and every time I order some books I forget about it.

I love seeing Ready Player One on people's lists! It's so fantastic! I also like that you enjoyed The Darkest Minds, I'm planning to read it this winter.

Happy New Year!

Ready Player One was fun, I didn't put it on my top ten but I almost did. Doomsday Book sounds like a very interesting premise, and I'm not familiar with it at all. Will check it out.

Have a great New Year!

You can beat me now with a wet noodle I still haven't read - Ready Player One.

The Darkest Minds is the only one I've read or heard of. I'll have to check these others out!

I have not read any of these but majority are on my TBR pile, like Bracken, Novik, Grant, Lynch, Brennan and Cline. :)
Great list!
Happy new year!

Awesome list, Darkest Minds made my 2012 list. I adore Grant, ooh and the second book in that series is my favorite :) Happy New Year :)

Ooh I loved Feed and Ready Player One too. I'm probably one of the few who didn't care for Among Others though.

You should read The Darkest Minds. It is so amazing. I think The Darkest Minds blows Divergent out of the water. :)

I hope you enjoy The Lies of Locke Lamora. It is such a fun book. You should go read The Darkest Minds right now. Once you start reading the books, you will want to consume them all at once. :)

That's right! I remember your review of The Republic of Thieves. You should go read The Lies of Locke Lamora right now. It is such a fun ride and a bit heart breaking at times too.

Happy New Year to you too Abby! The Darkest Minds is such a fantastic book. I am anxiously waiting to get my hands on Never Fade. I am next in line to get a book from the library.

The Lies of Locke Lamora is so much fun. You should read it. :) His Majesty's Dragon is an adorable book too. It is the first in a long series, but the first book is the strongest. You can just read that one and be done.

LOL. A book cover can definitely make or break a person's interest in a book. You should try to look past it though, because the book is amazing.

You should. They are both so much fun! Happy New Year to you too. :)

LOL. No worries. My TBR list is quite long too.

Doomsday Book was so good. The second book in the series is To Say Nothing of the Dog, which is supposed to be amazing. It is also a more upbeat book than Doomsday Book.

LOL. Yes! I read something that Tabitha hasn't yet! ;) Ready Player One is a fun book though. :)

Mira Grant is such a great writer. I need to find time to read some more of her books and novellas.

Among Others is definitely a controversial read. People either love it or hate it. I have fond memories of using interlibrary loan, so it holds a special place in my heart.

Among Others looks really cool! I've never heard of this book before. I heard Feed is a really great zombie book. I have Ready Player One, but I still need to read it. The Darkest Minds sounds like a great read. I heard the plot is really complex? but I heard it's an amazing read.

Unknown said...
December 31, 2013 at 11:39 PM

The Darkest Minds plot (at least the first book, I haven't read the second book) isn't very complex at all. Among Others, Feed, Ready Player One, and The Darkest Minds are all really fantastic. :)

So many books I need to read! And I agree: His Majesty's Dragon is (to quote my daughter) "freakin' awesome!" It made my TTT list, and I would have included the next four books if I'd had room.

Unknown said...
December 31, 2013 at 11:47 PM

LOL. I agree that His Majesty's Dragon is freakin' awesome. :) If you like audio books, you should give these books a listen. Simon Vance reads the books, and his Temeraire voice is the only voice I hear when I think of Temeraire.

Bujold, Cline, AND Lynch? You had a very good year indeed. My favorite of your list would be the Bujold outing. Such a great book.

I don't own that book yet, and I can't get English books at the library... I also have far too many books already on my kindle, and I should try to make a good dent in those first.

Ok Darkest Minds sounds awesome. I’ve never heard of a book that mixes psychic abilities and dystopian. I love the cover of A Natural History of Dragons and it makes me want to read it so bad. Cool list. You have great taste in fantasy and sci-fi.

Unknown said...
January 2, 2014 at 11:34 PM

Thanks! :) The Darkest Minds was so much fun. If you are in the mood for an action-packed YA book, it is perfect. If you are more in the mood for a fun fantasy memoir with a bit of a mystery thrown in, A Natural History of Dragons is perfect. They are both fantastic, but very different books. :)
