Sunday Update!

This week has been shaping up to be pretty excellent! First, I got a lot of wonderful books this week including The Tropic of Serpents. I am trying so hard to keep to the order of my TBR list, but I am definitely struggling! I want to read this book so badly! It is the sequel to A Natural History of Dragons, which was one of my top books of 2013. Second, my graduate adviser appears open to the idea of me sending my dissertation committee this semester. He has forgotten that there are large sections he has not read yet, but this conversation has boosted my spirits.
Book Haul

ARCs & Galleys

I received three ARCs this week. First, I received The Tropic of Serpents by Marie Brennan from Tor. Second, I received Honor among Thieves by James SA Corey and Lovecraft's Monsters edited by Ellen Datlow.

From Giveaways

I received two books from giveaways this week. I received Angelfall by Susan Ee from the lovely ladies at My Shelf Confessions. I also won One Night Three Hearts by Adele Allaire from a Book Nookie Reviews tour. I am not sure whose site I won it on. :( If I won it on your site, post a comment, and I will credit you!

Bought

I bought four books this week! Crazy! I bought The Golem and the Jinni by Helene Wecker and Perfect Ruin by Lauren DeStefano from Amazon. They were both Kindle daily deals! I got two books from Goodwill today. I snapped up Harry Potter & the Prisoner of Azkaban by JK Rowling ($0.69!) and Doctor Sleep by Stephen King (I had already bought the e-book, but I got the hardback for $1.29!). I love my Goodwill. The book selection is crazy amazing. Also, I am almost halfway to owning all of the physical Harry Potter books again!

Currently Reading

The Flight of the Silvers: I am really enjoying this book so far. It grabbed me from the first page. There is lots of action!

Hollow City: I am halfway through with book, and I am also enjoying this book more than I thought. If you liked the end of Mrs. Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children, you will like the style of this book.

A Dance with Dragons: Because I finished my latest Sookie book, I am back to listening to this book while getting ready for bed. It is still slow going, because I am only listening to it while getting ready for bed, but it is good. I am curious to see how this book turns out.

Read This Week

Dead as a Doornail by Charlaine Harris
Hang Wire by Adam Christopher

Bloggiesta

Bloggiesta is going well. I have been doing research on web hosts today and figuring out how I want my About Me page to look like. I was out most of the day, so I wasn't able to sit and work on my blog too long. Sunday will be coding day!

Important Commenting Information!!! (I will keep this info at the bottom of the next week's posts.)

I just switched my commenting system over to Disqus, because I recently realized that the Blogger commenting system doesn't automatically email people when I (or others) respond to their comments. Well, it can, but it doesn't work in a seamless way. So in a moment of spontaneity, I decided to put Disqus on my blog. It is a fairly popular commenting system, so hopefully this won't be too upsetting for anyone. I find it really easy to use as a commenter, so I thought folks would be okay with it. We will see how this goes. If you all hate it, we will try something new.

If you can't see Disqus, I have found a couple of reasons why this may be happening! Please don't write this off as a Disqus issue, if you can't see Disqus, there are probably other things on the Internet that you can't see.

1. Are you using Avast for antivirus protection on your browser? If so, click the Avast icon in your browser and allow "social networks allowed." If this doesn't work, try also allowing "web analytics allowed." You can just do this for my blog or just this one page on my blog. Avast can be very stringent, and it hides Disqus, Google+ commenting, and social media buttons on sites for me. I was so annoyed that I could never find a Twitter button to share things until I changed this setting in Avast.

2. Do you use other plugins or extensions? They might be causing the issue. I haven't noticed a problem with using plugins like ad-aware/ad-blocker.  You may need to turn some of these off and refresh the page or restart the browser.

3. You may need to clear your brower's cache or cookies. On the other hand, you may need to enable cookies.

If you STILL can't see Disqus, please let me know! Feel free to email or tweet me! I switched to Disqus to improve our discussions, if you can't comment, Disqus isn't worth it.

I really want to try out the dragon books, I've heard really awesome things and those covers are amazing. I love my Goodwill too, I'm always finding amazing deals. I'm glad Bloggiesta is working out for you!

You got some great deals on a couple books. My Bloggiesta is going well too. I started looking around for new templates but couldn't find any that I wanted that were for sale. Every time I mess with my template though Blogger screws up.... I might just leave things alone now. I haven't been to my goodwill to look at books recently I need to go back!

Yay! The Discus thing was irking me as I didn't know where to turn to fix it. I end up re-buying my favourites or just buying multiples. I think I have six editions of Jane Austen's novels on my bookshelf because each version has a really cool cover.

Tropic of Serpent and Star Wars both look good. I picked up a Star Wars book this week too, never really read any of the Expanded Universe but with the movie coming I kinda got the bug. I want to get the HP books too, I like the new covers a lot.

Heh. My wife just finished re-reading the third Potter book. I have read the series at least four times, I just cant help myself every so often.

I have Honor Among Theives too, it was all I could do to not just put at the front of the list. I still have a StarWars love going.

Great haul this week!! Good luck with your coding. I like Disqus and I have been thinking about adding it to my site as well. I just haven't sat down with it yet. I fee you with trying to stick to your TBR pile! I am having the same problem, new books seem to beg to be read first! But I am sticking to it as best as I can! We can do this Challenge Buddy! hehehe

We are doing going to rock our TBR pile challenge this year! I think people are going to take my book blog away from me if I don't read the Lunar Chronicles soon anyway! LOL. :)

It has been an exciting week, but you know that more than most! :)

My double trouble challenge is totally going to be lopsided this month though! LOL.

I have been wanting to read a Star Wars novel for a while and when I saw James SA Corey's name on the cover, I couldn't say no. I love the Expanse series so much. Corey knows how to write a page turner. (BTW, I always feel weird talking about Corey as a singular entity when it is two guys.)

I loved A Natural History of Dragons, so I have high hopes for Tropic of Serpents. I also really love Corey's Expanse series, so I think Honor Among Thieves will be great. The Star Wars EU books are all over the place in terms of quality, so if you are disappointed with the book you got, you might need to try again.

I think I might have six editions of the Jane Austen books on my kindle. Whenever I see a freebie and I am not sure if I own it, I pick it up again!

I am glad to hear that your Bloggiesta goals are going well. I didn't get as much done as I wanted, but I am still happy that I made some progress on my blog.

The Goodwill near my old house never really had any books, but the Goodwill near my new apartment is awesome. There are so many books!

You should read A Natural History of Dragons. It is a ton of fun. It is fantasy, a memoir, historical fiction, and a little adventure-y. It has something for everyone!

Ooh, I hope you enjoy The Golem and the Jinni! A Natural History of Dragons looks very good - i hope you enjoy it's sequel too. I think I'll have to look that series up a bit more!

Awesome haul! I look forward to reading Brennan's books, they look and sound so good. I also look forward to Perfect Ruin, and I heard lots of good of The Golem and the Jinni. And yay for Potter!
Happy reading!

I saw the Star Wars book and debated requesting it, but I just have so many already. I have Angelfall and am getting the next book in that series, but still need to read them both. I hope you enjoy your haul! Good luck with Disqus. I love using it and switched for the same reason you did, but I do get less comments, like a lot less, so I haven't decided if it's worth it.

I might have to switch to a different commenting system. At least one person I know can't see the commenting system and doesn't know why. I need people to be able to comment.

If they're using Internet Explorer they have to select version 9, I believe. There was one other system I was looking at, but they don't off it anymore. Let me know what you find out about others. Although, I hate to switch again. Blogger's is just not sufficient.

I think I might switch to IntenseDebate. There is so much I really like about disqus, but if folks can't easily see it, I can't use it. I shouldn't need a troubleshooting section to explain how to comment.

I'm a fan of The Tropic of Serpents cover! I've been meaning to read Angelfall for ages now! Have heard so many good things about it. I bought a Dance with Dragons during xmas...but I'm still on A Clash of Kings haha.
Those are really sweet deals on the books you got! Happy reading Pamela!

I have heard so many good things about Angelfall too! I can't wait to read it. :)

That is awful that you lost all of your comments! I am syncing all of my comments with blogger, so I wonder if I will lose all of my comments too, if I switch to IntenseDebate.

Tressa said...

I did select the option to only have it post on new posts, but obviously that didn't carry over. I didn't sync - I don't know if I even know how to do that. :) You're probably fine, plus you haven't had Disqus that long.

You might be able to sync the comments even after you remove disqus from your site? It is frustrating how challenging it is to move from one commenting program to another.
